Marlborough Sounds Future Access Study

Bringing Marlborough’s communities together to inform future transport solutions in and out of the Sounds

Sensitive, simple and timeless communications

Severe weather events in 2021 and again in 2022 closed roads in the Marlborough Sounds, leaving people with limited or no access for prolonged periods, and in some cases with no feasible, safe, long-term alternative access.

At the end of 2022, members of the Publik Agency communications and design team were asked to join Marlborough District Council and their consultant, Stantec, on the development of the Marlborough Sounds Future Access Study to support the case for funding safe and resilient long-term access solutions for the Sounds, both for itself and to obtain funding assistance from Waka Kotahi.

Making data meaningful

We are very proud of the part we played in the project, a key element of which was creating engagement materials that were easily understood by people, proactively answered their questions and enabled them to give valuable feedback on the future of their transport network.

As well as simplifying the process and detailed findings of the study's engineering and geology consultants (without making it inaccurate), we had to make sure communications reached as many people as possible. This was no easy task, given how large the Marlborough Sounds is, its access issues (thanks to the storms) and limited internet throughout. The project required a multi-activity and multimedia outreach.

Bringing together the options

Publik assisted with video production to provide background and information about the study and the ‘emerging preferred options’ and ‘hazard adaptation pathways’ for each of the geographic areas in the Sounds.

Marlborough Mayor Nadine Taylor and Strategic Planning and Economic Development Manager Neil Henry talk through why Council undertook the study, the types of analysis that went into it and provide an overview of the next steps for the wider Marlborough community to provide their feedback.

Animated maps produced in collaboration with our in-house graphic designer brought the repair programmes to life.

Taking it to the public

The study’s engagement process also required a personal touch.

It was all hands on deck to make sure the experts were personally available to answer questions and provide information. Publik coordinated and organised seven public drop-in sessions in Marlborough and Nelson, which were attended by thousands of residents and ratepayers.

The creative and forward-thinking project was driven by local needs and grassroots participation to deliver the best results for the community and for the Council.

The community’s involvement in the study was crucial and highly valued. Our part of the project is over, but for them, it is only the beginning as final decisions are made and construction starts on their future transport network.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story can make all the difference.
